When a Charging Port May Need Cleaning

Lint can collect in a charging port and become compacted by repeated cable use. A buildup may prevent the cable from seating properly.

A cable that cannot seat properly may charge intermittently. Compacted lint is one possible cause; the cable, port contacts, and other charging components still need to be checked.

Check These Three Things First

1. Try a different cable and a different wall adapter. A faulty cable or adapter can cause symptoms that resemble a port problem.
2. If your phone charges wirelessly, try that. Wireless charging working while wired charging does not suggests a problem in the wired charging path, but does not confirm which component is faulty.
3. Shine a light into the port. You are looking for a grey or black pad of packed lint sitting at the bottom, or contacts that look bent, green, or charred.

One thing not to do: do not dig it out with a needle, a paperclip, or a SIM tool. The contacts inside are thin and easy to bend, and metal can short two of them together while the battery is connected. A $20 cleaning turns into a real repair that way.

Signs the Port Needs Inspection

• The cable feels loose or falls out on its own, even in a clean port
• You can see bent, missing, or blackened contacts inside
• The port is visibly crooked or pushed into the phone
• Charging only works with the cable held at an angle or under pressure
• The phone or cable gets hot at the connection
• It charges but will no longer transfer data to a computer
• The port got wet, and charging has been unreliable since

iPhone and Android Are Not the Same Repair

The price is the same either way, but the work behind it is not, and it is worth knowing what your phone needs.

On most iPhones the charging port sits on a flex cable that also carries the microphones and antenna contacts. It unplugs and a new one goes in. That is the assembly lying next to the phone on the left of the photo.

On a lot of Android phones, Samsung included, the USB-C port is soldered onto a board. The old one has to be desoldered and a new one fitted in its place under a microscope, which is the repair shown on the right. Some models put that port on a small separate sub-board, which makes it easier; others put it on the main board, which does not.
