What to Do Right Now

- Turn it off and leave it off. Every time you wake the screen to check whether it still works, you are pushing current through a wet board.
- Do not plug it in. Charging a phone with moisture inside is the fastest way to turn a cleanable board into a dead one.
- Take the case off and pull the SIM tray out. Both trap moisture against the phone.
- Do not shake it or blow it with a hair dryer. That pushes liquid deeper into the board and heat warps parts.
- Bring it in as soon as you can. Corrosion starts within hours. Same day is much better than next week.
Why Rice Does Not Work
Look at the photo above. That white residue on the back of the screen and the rainbow staining inside the frame are corrosion. No amount of drying removes it, because the problem stopped being water some time ago and became chemistry.
Rice pulls a little moisture out of the air around the phone. It does not reach inside a sealed device, and it does nothing to the liquid already sitting on the board. Meanwhile the corrosion keeps eating the contacts and traces the whole time the phone sits in that bag. Rice dust and starch also work their way into the charging port and speaker mesh.
Drying the outside does not undo what is happening on the inside. The board has to be opened and cleaned.
Signs of Water Damage

Not necessarily, and it costs nothing to find out. Sooner is always better, but we have opened phones weeks after a spill and still cleaned them up. Bring it in rather than assuming.

A phone that survived the first day can still fail weeks later as corrosion spreads. Getting it opened and cleaned while it is working is far cheaper than dealing with a dead board later.
Is salt water worse than tap water?
Yes. Salt water and pool water are far more aggressive, and sugary drinks leave a sticky residue that holds moisture against the board. Tell us what it went into.
Can you get my photos off a phone that will not turn on?
We can attempt it. It depends on the condition of the storage, so we cannot promise a result, but tell us it is the priority and we will approach the repair with that in mind.
My phone is water resistant. How did this happen?
Water resistance comes from seals and adhesive that wear out with age, heat, and drops. A phone that survived the pool two summers ago is not the same phone today.
